The first ITF World Cup Taekwon‑Do Games in a huge success

The World Cup Taekwon‑Do Games have first ever successfully been held in Santiago del Estero Argentina, from 3rd to 10th Oct. 2022.

This event will remain in the great history of the ITF, since it had an EXPECTACULAR development from Start to Finish, where nothing was missing according to the standards of the Championships of the ITF World.

There participated 1131 participants including 846 competitors(Gup holders: 434 and Dan holders: 412), Umpires and Coaches from 30 countries around the world.

The following member countries were present:

USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Greece, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Italy, Scotland, England , and host Argentina.

The Organizing Committee was chaired by: GM Adolfo Villanueva, Vice President ITF and President of FAAT, and GM Ing. Osvaldo Ríos Olivero President PTC.

The following authorities of the ITF executive body were present:

The Opening Ceremony took place with 5,000 people in attendance on 5th of Oct. 2022, at Nodo Tecnologico SDE Santiago del Estero in which His Excellency Dr. Gerardo Zamora, the Governor of Santiago Del Estero, and other Dignitaries were invited. At the Opening Ceremony the congratulatory speeches were made by the Governor and the ITF President.

The Governor offered his thanks to the ITF for honouring his city Santiago Del Estero, to host the World Cup Taekwon‑Do Games first ever held in the ITF history as well as for reviving the normal lives of peoples throughout this game who were in tremendous troubles due to the corona pandemic and emphasised the role of Teakwon-Do in his city, especially for the education of the young peoples and expressed his concern to support the ITF Taekwon‑Do in the future.

Passing of Grandmaster Han Sam-Soo

Tae Kwon Do Times wishes to express sincere condolences to the family, friends and students of Grandmaster Han Sam-Soo on the sad occassion of his passing.

The Taekwon-Do world and ITF stlyists in particular, mourn the loss of his life, as he was an important figure in both the development and global dissemination of Taekwon-Do.
Grandmaster Han began his training in the martial arts back in the 1950s and by 1964 he switched to the nacent Korean Martial Art of Self Defense, created by General Choi Hong-Hi and learned directly from the Founder.

As a pioneer of Taekwon-Do, he introduced the Art to Jamaica, at the request of General Choi in 1974. He lived there for 3 years and from there he taught in the southern part of the United States, before finally settling in Canada, where he taught for decades.

As a Master Instructor in the ITF he served as the Chairman of the ITF Umpire Committee, as well as the Chair of the ITF Merger Committee. Master Han was a member of both the 4th and 7th ITF Demonstration Teams. The 7th ITF Demonstration Team was historic, as it introduced Taekwon-Do to the north Korea, offically known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. This groundbreaking event in 1980 had an impact on the ITF and Taekwon-Do in general that is still taking shape. Grandmaster Han passed away in his 78th year of life. While we grieve his loss, please remember all of his contributions. He so very much loved Taekwon-Do, that he wore his Taekwon-Do DoBok on his wedding day. May those that knew him, be comforted by their memories and all students of Taekwon-Do be thankful for his lifetime work in the Art we love.

As the President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation, I regret that the World Taekwon-Do Federation has decided to go separately into the Olympics despite our efforts of merger. To be sure, since the name Taekwon-Do is unequivo­cally in the Olympics, as the founder of this art, it is, indeed, a joyous event not only for myself but for all Korean people. The WTF, however, must realize that entry into the Olympics alone under the present condition will result in permanent division of Taekwon-Do into “sport Taekwon-Do” and “martial art Taekwon-Do.”

To put in proper perspective, Martial art is to simultaneously cultivate one’s morality as well as physical techniques. However, the WTF, heated by Olympic matches whose only aim is to acquire gold medals, is sacrificing the true ideals of Taekwon-Do by devaluing it into ordinary sport. If present WTF rules, which advocate only full-contact sparring, were to be applied without change, the system of Dan or Kup, which reflects one’s personal dignity, techniques and seniority among Taekwon-Do people will become useless. This will result in indiscriminate participation by those lacking thorough knowledge of Taekwon-Do such as soccer players, boxers, kick-boxers, etc.  This will bring about the erasure of  Taekwon-Do’s identity. If this was to occur, our nation and human history will not forgive this irresponsible action committed by the WTF.

Needless to say, WTF’s solo entry into the Olympics has caused many Taekwon-Do instructors and martial arts veterans to be perplexed and will not be supported by most Taekwon-Do practitioners.

For the past ten years, with willingness to make all necessary concessions, I have tried my best to unify Taekwon-Do. This was to preserve the original concept and techniques even though Taekwon-Do would one day become part of the Olympics.

Since the original Taekwon-Do was made not with Olympics in mind but for more important aims, the lTF will do its best to ensure that it retains its position to maintain the undiluted pure Taekwon-Do so that it may be handed down as a treasure for the coming generation.

Regardless of Olympics, for the past seven years I have fortunately discussed with many prominent martial arts organizations world-wide the idea of forming the International Martial Arts Games Committee. “Martial Arts Olympics,” would allow all martial arts to enjoy participation under the fairest of conditions without politi­cal and monetary influence.

Now we have arrived at the fruitful season of its implementation.

Finally, I call on all true Taekwon-Do families to support this endeavor and participate in the IMGC to protect the interest of all martial arts practitioners.
