Master Kim and Jennifer Kim will Speak at
International Day of Peace in Korea on September 7

“Be a Global Citizen for World Peace”

The Kims are on their way to Korea for the International Day of Peace Programme in Goyang, Republic of Korea. They were invited by the Korean Organizing Committee for United Nations International Day of Peace (KOCUN-IDP). The Kims have been asked to speak about Chicago’s Peace Day activities and share their views on the topic of Global Citizenship for Peace. The Korean Committee aims to have a sincere dialogue in order to raise awareness of the high values of peace and to spread a culture of peace. Three hundred delegates are expected from governments, UN agencies, international and domestic NGOs, religions, academic and cultural society, and youth leaders.

September 7th was the original date of Peace Day in Chicago chosen by the late founder of The Peace School, Grand Master Kim, who founded Peace Day in Chicago in 1978, making this gathering for peace in his home country of special significance to all of us at The Peace School. Wherever you may be on September 7th, let’s join together as global citizens through Peace Breathing: inhale world, exhale peace.

Global citizenship is the idea that all people have rights and civic responsibilities that come with being a member of the world, with whole-world philosophy and sensibilities, rather than as a citizen of a particular nation or place. The idea is that one’s identity transcends geography or political borders and that responsibilities or rights are derived from membership in a broader class: “humanity”. This does not mean that such a person denounces or waives their nationality or other, more local identities, but such identities are given “second place” to their membership in a global community. Extended, the idea leads to questions about the state of global society in the age of globalization.

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September.
